Random Team Generator
Paste names, choose teams, click split. Done.
How to use the random team generator
Using SplitTeams is simple. Paste your list of names into the box above — one name per line — then choose how many teams you want. Click "Split Teams" and your names are instantly divided into fair, random groups. Copy any team with one click, or share the full result using the share link.
You can paste names directly from a spreadsheet — just copy a column in Excel or Google Sheets and paste it into the box. The tool handles up to 200 names and up to 20 teams.
Uses for a random team generator
Sports and PE classes
Coaches and PE teachers use SplitTeams to create fair, unbiased teams for practice games, tournaments, and drills. Instead of the awkward process of captains picking players, everyone gets randomly assigned — no feelings hurt, no bias. Works for football, basketball, netball, cricket, or any team sport.
Classroom group work
Teachers use SplitTeams to randomly assign students to groups for projects, discussions, and activities. Random grouping encourages students to work with people they might not normally pair up with, building social skills alongside academic ones. Paste your class register and have groups in seconds.
Work and team-building events
HR managers and team leads use SplitTeams to create random groups for workshops, icebreakers, hackathons, and offsites. Random assignment ensures cross-departmental mixing — exactly the point of most team-building activities. No awkward "you choose your own groups" moments.
Games and social events
Pub quizzes, board game nights, escape rooms, charity events — any time you need to split a crowd into teams, SplitTeams gets it done in seconds. Share the link so everyone can see their team on their own phone.
How are the teams generated?
SplitTeams uses the Fisher-Yates shuffle algorithm, the gold standard for unbiased randomisation. Every name has an equal chance of landing in any team. Names are shuffled first, then distributed round-robin across teams — so if you have 7 names and 2 teams, you get teams of 4 and 3, as balanced as possible.
